Finly is one of the unincorporated towns found in the Brandywine Township of Hancock County in the state of Indiana. The town has been given many names over the years, namely Reedville Station, Carrollton, Kinder and Tailholt. In April 28, 1847, a post office named Kinder was established on the present site of Carrollton. It was then given the name Carrollton on January 26, 1869. It also adopted the name Reedville, which the railroad and express companies named their station after.
In September 30, 1905, the post office was taken away and redirected to the nearby community of Fountaintown. However in October 13, 1912, the post office was reestablished as Finly, named after Congressman Finly Gray. Finally, the town was locally known as “Tailholt”, which was poetically named and immortalized by famous American writer and poet James Whitcomb Riley.
