Located in the central region of the state of Indiana, the city of Lebanon serves as the county seat for Boone County. As of 2013, the city is home to more than 15,700 people.
The city’s history began in the early 1800s, when a man named Abner Longley built a log cabin in the area, which was then mostly swamplands. The community itself and its first post office were founded in 1832. The city’s name originates from a time when early settlers saw hickory trees in the area that made them think about the cedars of Lebanon as they were described in the Bible.
Lebanon is home to the Cragun House, which was built in 1893 in the Victorian style. The house is filled with objects and artifacts collected by the Cragun family during their travels around the world. The house, which was recently inscribed into the National Register of Historic Places, is being maintained by the Boone County Historical Society.
