Thorntown is located in the Sugar Greek Township of Boone County, Indiana. Based on data from the United States Census Bureau, the town was home to 1,492 residents in 2013.

A community post office was established in the area in 1830, while the town itself was platted a year later in 1831. Thorntown is the English version of the name of a Native American village which preceded the newer town.
