Frozen Pipe Prevention Tips
-
1
Keep the water flowing. If the weather outside is extremely cold, keep one or two faucets slowly running. The constant trickle of water through your pipes prevents the pipe from freezing.
-
2
Warm it Up. The pipes most prone to freezing tend to be the ones near an outside wall or near the window. If possible, direct warm air to the colder areas. Start in the basement by checking the pipes near the exterior of your home.
-
3
Leave cabinet doors open. If your kitchen sink is on an outside wall, leave the cabinet doors open so that warm air can circulate and allow a trickle of water to flow through the faucet during cold weather extremes.
-
4
Tape it up. Have a plumber temporarily install heat tape during cold weather, which helps warm the pipes.
-
5
Seal leaks. Be mindful of any air leaks around the electrical wiring, dryer vents, and most especially the pipes. Keep out the cold using insulation or caulk. With the severity of winter, even one small opening can bring with it enough cold air to cause a pipe to become frozen.
