How to Prevent Water Damage

Floods, storms, broken pipes and leaky roofs create excess moisture that can harm your property. While natural disasters cannot be avoided, water damage to your property can be prevented.

How do you prevent water damage from impacting your home? Here are some tips that may be useful:

  • Always keep your gutters clean – If you notice water stains on your walls or your floor, you might be neglecting your gutters and allowing water to seep through your walls because of the overflow. When your gutters are clean, they will channel rainwater away from your home. Regular cleaning of your gutters should be scheduled every six months, or more frequently if trees regularly drop leaves into your gutter.
  • Check appliance hoses and drainage systems for wear and tear – Your dishwasher, washing machine, and other appliances that use water can cause water damage in your home. To minimize their potential for leaks, switch to stainless steel hoses that are durable and non-corrosive. Your refrigerator should also be checked for leaks and condensation that may be impacting your floor without you noticing.
  • Have your pipes checked periodically – No matter how careful you are in ensuring that your pipes don’t freeze during the cold winter months, leaks may still occur. These can happen for multiple reasons, which is why a periodic check of your home’s pipes is a must. If you notice water stains, bulges in the floor or moldy spots in areas near pipes, there is a good chance a leak exists.
